If you meet the below requirement and you apply to AAIP, it is likely that Alberta government will give you a chance to run the business you choose. If your business generates positive cash flow, you shall receive PR status smoothly.
- Minimum 3 years of experience as an active business owner/manager ( i.e. you are a shareholder working in the business) or a 4 years of experience as a senior manager (i.e. you worked full time for a business but you are not shareholder) within the most recent 10 years.
- A minimum of high school diploma that meets Canada ECA standard.
- Minimum English proficiency CLB 4444.
- Minimum net worth CAD 300,000 (close to 7 million Taiwanese dollar, 1.6 Million Hong Kong dollars, 1.5 million Chinese Yuan Dollars).
- The Canadian business you manage will hire at least one full time Canadian worker receiving not less than minimum wage.

Three basic questions to ask when finding business

First, do you have the principal skill? If this business is a skill based like sushi restaurant, car repair, or barber shop, then you should have the same skill as a sushi chef, car technician and hairdresser. You shall not try to only rely on the worker you hire and you shall possess the ability to do all the work when facing labour shortage.

When you look at the purchase price, you shall double the cost to obtain a more accurate estimate of the capital you need in your first year. Please remember the purchase price does not include rent, utility and payroll cost. For example, since the investment amount required by AAIP is CAD 100,000, if CAD 100,000 is all budget you have, the purchase price you look for is better less than CAD 60,000.

However, sites like Realtor.ca can still be a very handy tool for you to learn something quickly like knowing the distance relationship for these communities. For example, from this above image we learn that these five communities that all appear on the AAIP RES list are all near Greater Edmonton and the image also tell us how far each community is to Edmonton.

If you can’t find a business for sale in a community, the reason for this could be very “positive”.

In some communities like Sylvan Lake which is already very popular due to the fact that it is a destination tourism city for local Canadians, its business opportunity might be sought after by investors so the sellers might feel their business does not need help from realtors to sell. In this case, the chance of running a profitable business in the hospitality industry like a restaurant is often much higher with the condition that if you can find a spot to run your business in Sylvan Lake.

Although liquor store is not labelled as an ineligible business on AAIP website, considering the fact that consumption of liquor is often associated with negative topics like driving safety or heavily drinking, whether the buyer can receive community support letter shall be the first thing to consider.

If this shop does not have retained earning but has reported loss every year, you need to find out the difficulty spot that the seller did not overcome and ensure you could overcome it. In this case, I believe only experienced liquor store manager shall consider taking over this business as they might know how to change the situation and turn losses into profits.

If this business has reported profit in the last few years, then you shall carefully look into the reasons behind as there might be bigger issues than finance reason that makes the seller lose his devotion to this lucrative business. Some crazy ideas of such reasons could be a haunted house or a horrible neighbor or gang member asking for protection fee or anything that has impacted the work environment so badly that the owner just wants to move out.

Grande Prairie Alberta is over 4 hours driving distance from Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta. Although it is not near Edmonton and Calgary, Grande Prairie is a modern city with population enough to support stable business activity.

If this is the case, as long as the new buyer can generate the same level of net profit after taking over, the chance of getting AAIP RES approval is positive.

2. On the other hand, if this print shop indeed has reported payroll expense for at least 2 full time workers, to maintain the same level of net income, the buyer must be a diligent worker to master all the tips from the seller, which include continuous learning new technology trend and new needs of the customers so the existing market will not be easily replaced by emerging new technology that makes DIY printing more viable so the customers stop relying on print shop.
